Melvin G. Hawkins, 54, of Newton, was charged with domestic abuse assault, second offense, at 8:11 p.m. Sept. 4 after police were called to a residence on West Third Street North. Hawkins told police he had been drinking and flipped a coffee table and continued to shout he wanted the victim to leave. The victim had a red print on their left leg that was allegedly caused by Hawkins striking at it. Hawkins was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Remington S. Clark, 26, of Newton, was charged with driving while barred at 4 p.m. Sept. 7 after police saw Clark pull up to the westbound stop sign at South Fifth Avenue East and East Eighth Street South. Clark was driving a maroon Chevy pickup and was not valid to drive.

Clark eventually stopped in the 700 block of South Fifth Avenue East and had switched seats with a passenger in the vehicle. He has a driving status of barred from July of 2017 until July 2020. Clark was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.
