Bolts strike back, take down Collins-Maxwell

MAXWELL — The Baxter volleyball team flipped the script on its former teammates Tuesday night.

On Sept. 11, Collins-Maxwell swept the Bolts at the Madrid quadrangular. Things went in the opposite direction the second time as Baxter defeated the Spartans in four sets.

Senior Jordynn Wesselink and sophomore Amber Weltha powered the Bolts with a combined 33 kills as Baxter won 25-21, 20-25, 25-22, 25-15 during Iowa Star Conference South Division play.

“It was a complete team effort tonight,” Baxter coach Scott Ranck said. “I am very proud of these girls, not only for the win, but for their persistence, effort and determination in the progress they are making.”

Wesselink’s monster night included 19 kills, 11 digs and six aces. Weltha added 14 kills, junior Sydney Schmidt also had a double-double with 36 assists and 11 digs and senior Sailor Hinegardner chipped in a team-high 27 digs.

“Overall, it was a very fun and satisfying night,” Ranck said.

Ranck said the pivotal point in the match came in the set the Bolts lost. Down 15-4, Baxter (10-8 overall, 5-1 in conference play) rallied until the Spartans (15-4, 5-2) evened the match at 25-20. The momentum was carried into the final two sets though.

Baxter trailed 11-9 in the fourth set before closing on a 16-4 run that included three aces by Schmidt and five kills by Wesselink.

The Bolts had 14 aces on the night. Senior Mary Schabilion was 18-of-19 in serves with three aces, Hinegardner was 15-of-15 in serves and Schmidt finished 14-of-17 with three aces.

Sophomore Bekka Watt tallied four kills and eight digs, freshman Hailee Rainsbarger tallied four kills and three blocks, Schabilion finished with four kills, three digs and three blocks and senior Lexi Ewing collected eight digs.

The Bolts play in the BCLUW tournament at 8:30 a.m. Saturday in Conrad.
