DES MOINES — With a decisive advantage with production in the lane and from its bench, the Drake women’s basketball team got off to a strong start against instate rival Iowa State and then held off the Cyclones with a block in the final seconds.
Drake led by 10 at halftime before needing a block on an attempted game-tying 3-pointer as time expired. The Bulldogs held on to beat the Cyclones 83-80 at the Knapp Center.
With the game tied at 80, Becca Hittner, who scored eight points and dished out five assists, hit the game-winning bucket in the lane and was fouled with 2.4 seconds left. Hittner hit the free throw to put the Bulldogs up three points.
The Bulldogs (4-3) shot 56 percent from the floor, outscored Iowa State 40-20 in the paint and 29-17 in bench points, but a season-high 14 3-pointers kept the Cyclones close and they nearly rallied on the road.
Sare Rhine scored a game-high 24 points and grabbed six rebounds and the Bulldogs also got 16 points, seven rebounds and five assists from Maddy Dean off their bench.
Sammie Bachrodt also had 12 points and five assists for the Bulldogs, who made 11 3-pointers in the game. Four Drake players had at least five assists, and the Bulldogs assisted on 27 of their 32 made field goals.
Iowa State (3-3) was led by Emily Durr’s 21 points, while Bridget Carleton added 19 points, seven rebounds and a career-high five assists. Adriana Camber had a career-high 16 points, five rebounds and three assists.
The Cyclones were 14-of-31 from long range, but they only had 14 assists on 30 made field goals. Iowa State has now made a 3-pointer in 710 consecutive games.
Drake led 21-18 after one quarter and outscored the Cyclones 20-13 in the second quarter. Iowa State cut its lead in half with a 26-21 advantage in the third quarter.
The Cyclones, who trailed by 16 points midway through the third, outscored Drake 23-21 in the fourth quarter. Iowa State had a 10-point advantage in second-change points and out-rebounded the Bulldogs 37-31.
The 163 points was the highest scoring contest in the series since Dec. 8, 1999.
