COLFAX — Jarod Nichols recorded his second straight double-double, but the Colfax-Mingo boys’ basketball team turned it over 17 times and struggled from the floor during a 48-40 loss in South Iowa Cedar League action on Dec. 1.
Colfax-Mingo made 13-of-40 from the floor and were just 2-of-15 from long range as Montezuma knocked off the Tigerhawks 48-40.
Nichols finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds but no other Tigerhawk scored in double figures.
Senior Reegan Van Dyke had five points and 14 rebounds and senior Jonathan Jacobs added seven points and four assists.
Colfax-Mingo, which fell to 1-1 overall and 1-1 in the SICL, couldn’t overcome a slow start. The Tigerhawks trailed 9-4 after one quarter and were down 17-13 at halftime. Both teams got it going in the second half but Montezuma outscored Colfax-Mingo 31-27.
The Braves (1-1, 1-1) hit eight 3-pointers in the win. Eight different Montezuma players scored but no one had more than 10.
The Tigerhawks continued to play without starting guard Brady Berkey, who injured his hand during football season.
Montezuma 78, Colfax-Mingo 32
COLFAX — Class 1A No. 9 Montezuma buried 10 3-pointers and led 45-10 at halftime. Montezuma then outscored the Tigerhawks 25-8 in the third quarter and went on to win 78-32 during South Iowa Cedar League action on Dec. 1.
Colfax-Mingo senior McKeely Tjaden led the Tigerhawks with 12 points and seven rebounds.
Senior Ries Wilson had five points and five rebounds. Junior Jordan Atwood also grabbed five boards. Nine different Tigerhawks scored but only two scored more than three points.
