As this year is coming to a close, I think about various things — and one of them is my visit to Newton for my class reunion in June. Since I live out of state now, the visit to my hometown is now only done on an annual basis. I really enjoyed attending my reunion, held at the American Legion. Since it is next to the football stadium, I am reminded of how I haven’t seen a game there in 10 years. This is a big deal as I was the football team’s equipment manager for three seasons. Someday I hope to see another Cardinals game there.
During these annual visits to Newton one place I like to see is Emerson Hough School, even though I went to a different elementary school — Lincoln. Reading about Emerson Hough, the writer, continues to inspire my own writing.
I am pleased that it was re-opened as an elementary school over a year ago. As many of you know, I was opposed to its closure in 2010. The school board did the right thing to re-open it, even though it took a while.
