Four Mustang girls earn all-HOIC honors

PCM sophomore Regan Freland welcomed an entirely different group of starters this season for the Mustangs after helping lead an experienced group to the state tournament the season before.

Freland’s overall numbers improved, and she earned her second-straight first-team all conference honor in the Heart of Iowa Conference.

Freland was part of the eight-player first team. Freshman guard Lilli Baird was one of eight players to land on the second team, and juniors Camryn Wignall and Morgan Uhlenhopp were both honorable mention selections.

Freland finished in the top four in the league in several different statistical categories.

In conference play, she ranked second at 20.4 points per game. Freland was second in 3-pointers made with 35, fourth in both assists (3.3) and steals (3) per game and also grabbed 4.2 rebounds per contest while making 75 percent from the free-throw line.

Overall, Freland averaged 19.1 points on the season, which ranked second among conference players. She was second with 51 made 3-pointers and second in steals per game at 3.18. She also grabbed four boards and dished out 3.6 assists per game, which ranked fourth, and made 74 percent from the line.

The rest of PCM’s starters were brand new and had little or no varsity experience when the season began.

Baird worked her way into the starting lineup early in the season because of strong outside shooting. Baird was coming off an ACL injury and suffered another ACL tear towards the final part of the season.

Before the injury, Baird was second on the team in conference scoring at 8.4 points per game. She made 16 3-pointers and grabbed 2.6 rebounds per contest. Overall, Baird averaged 7.8 points and 2.8 rebounds per game with 26 made 3-pointers. She played in 16 of the Mustangs’ 22 games.

Wignall was another Mustang coming off an ACL injury the season before. In her first season as a starter, Wignall averaged 6.7 points, 2.6 rebounds, 2.5 assists and two steals per game in conference play while making 20 3-pointers.

Overall, Wignall averaged 6.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists and two steals per game while burying 31 treys.

Uhlenhopp also was starting for the first time in a post position. She led the team in rebounding overall and rebounding in conference games at seven per contest. She scored four points per game on the season and 2.8 per game during conference play. She averaged one steal and one assist per contest.

The HOIC featured three teams ranked in Class 3A all season long.

North Polk, Nevada and Roland-Story all went 12-2 in HOIC games to share the conference title. North Polk advanced to the girls state basketball tournament and played in the state semifinals.

The Mustangs were 7-15 overall and 5-9 in the HOIC.

The only player in the HOIC to average more points in conference play than Freland was Nevada’s Lexy Koudelka, who will play at Division I Illinois State next season.

Koudelka led the league in both points (21.5) and rebounds (12.5) per conference game while shooting 63 percent from the floor and 77 percent from the free-throw line.
