CEDAR FALLS — The Rachels had it on Monday for Newton High’s girls.
Junior Rachel Rhoads and senior Rachel Berkland turned in the top individual performances for Newton at the University of Northern Iowa’s 2018 Girls A.D. Dickinson Relays. The Cardinal girls opened their short indoor track season at Cedar Falls Monday.
Rhoads finished 15th in the 800-meter run in 2 minutes, 35.61 seconds. Berkland claimed 17th in the 200-meter dash in 28.22 seconds.
The Cardinals competed in six running events and one field event with a limited squad.
Seniors Liz McVey and Jordan Banfield combined with junior Abbie Barr and freshman Kate Callaghan to turn in a 24th-place time of 1:59.68 in the 4x200 relay.
Senior Morgan Eide had the best finish for Newton in the 60-meter hurdles in 10.13 seconds for 24th. Berkland was 31st in 10.38 and Barr was 49th in 10.69. Eide was 59th in the 200-meter dash in 30.04 and McVey was 687th in 30.23.
In the 400-meter dash, Rhoads finished 31st in 1:07.28 with Barr in 52nd at 1:09.52 and junior Lakin Jenkins was 89th in 1:12.75. Banfield placed 66th in the 60-meter dash in 8.89 seconds and Callaghan was 76th in 9.02.
Senior Ali Bestell ended up 35th in the large shot put field. Bestell’s mark was 30 feet, 11 inches. Mackenzie Baker, a sophomore, had a throw of 29’3 1/2” for 52nd and senior Miranda Ervin was 60th with a toss of 38’7 1/2”.
The Newton girls will compete in the 2018 Little Hawkeye Conference indoor meet starting at 4:15 p.m. Thursday at Grinnell College in Grinnell.
