‘Winter vacation’

Oh, Saturday. You started out with so much promise, tossed me around a little bit and ended on a pretty high note.

My Saturday started with a little extra sleep and by that I mean my kids slept past 8 a.m. on a non-school day. As in typical kid form, on school days it is struggle to get them up and going but once the weekend comes, they are bright-eyed and ready to go well before my alarm clock would ever think of sounding.

We had planned a little get away for later in the day to Honey Creek Resort for some swimming which was the focus of the girls’ attention most of week. We had several countdowns in progress and once the girls were up and going, my husband and I were bombarded with “when are we leaving” more times than I can count.

I had a few errands to run that morning in Des Moines and set out to get those accomplished before leaving in the afternoon. Everything was going great while I was out and about. I found a new swimsuit, which is never an easy task, made quick stops in my favorite craft stores and found everything I wanted while shopping for the girls, even new cat pajamas for our night at the hotel.

I just needed make a quick stop for lunch at McDonald’s and I was headed home. Against my better judgment, I went inside McDonald’s instead of staying in the drive-thru. There was already about 20 cars waiting in line so I thought I could cheat the system by heading inside.

I was very wrong. Even as I walked through the door I knew things weren’t going well with about 20 people waiting for their food to come out. I placed my order and joined the crowd, hoping it wouldn’t be too long. Thirty minutes later, only two people had received their food and I was getting my money back and leaving. Also in that time, the drive-thru line had cycled several times. Lesson learned.

I finally made it home, about an hour later than I hoped, threw our bags together and we were out the door headed to “winter vacation.” The drive, while filled with questions of “when will we be there” and “how much longer,” went well and we arrived earlier than anticipated.

We checked in, got to our room and prepared to go swimming. The girls picked out which new swimsuit to wear, my youngest in her favorite, purple, and my oldest selecting a rainbow pattern and I went to put on my newly purchased suit. Within seconds I realized only half of my suit made the trip and my heart sank. Unlike when packing for my kids, I didn’t bring a back up and now had nothing to wear to the pool.

After the gift shop didn’t provide an answer, I did a quick Google search and found the nearest Walmart, about 20 minutes away. Knowing I didn’t have any other options, I sent my kids to the pool with my husband and hit the road.

As a planner by nature, the day hadn’t gone as I had hoped and this just added to my frustration. I was in and out as quick as I could walk and with an hour having come and gone since I first made the discovery, I was in the pool.

The rest of the trip went pretty well, barring an extra long wait for our food a dinner, and the girls had a great time swimming and staying in the hotel. We even got in a morning swim before we headed home the next day.

While I may have had some hoops to jump through to make the trip happen, making memories with my girls is worth it every time. Next time, I’ll just double check the bags before we leave.
