After speaking to Ty Rushing who is now a business reporter at the Sioux City Journal and learning about how Aldi located there, I spoke to a manager in a nearby town where we shop.
Apparently, the Aldi here in town was closed before The Maytag Company left because the store lacked shelf space and customers. This is a shame because now with many in Newton who are retired as we are, this type of store is needed badly. Two years ago, I had to go on a gluten-free diet because of severe allergies and because of problems after two consecutive brain injuries. We discovered Aldi quickly because gluten-free foods are expensive at regular grocery stores so we began shopping there out of town. In my opinion, as well as others who I have spoken to, the old Hy-Vee Drugstore on the corner of east 12th and First Avenue would be a perfect building for an Aldi.
Newton needs more businesses for competition and to keep business from going out of town. Ty suggested calling corporate headquarters and speaking to them about why they should come to Newton.
