Work is progressing on the Newton Rotary Club’s project to add permanent seating at the Maytag Bowl. City council approved TK Concrete Inc. of Pella to complete concrete work at the site for $15,155.
The project, which includes the construction of an ADA accessible paved seating area and sidewalks near the existing handicap parking, was pitched by the Newton Rotary Club as a community project. One member challenged the club to raise a substantial amount of money and he pledged to match it for a Newton project.
“We ended up raising a little more than $30,000 for a community project,” Lockwood said. “It was something that the member said he really wanted — something that would benefit the Newton community.”
After a series of meetings to narrow down the list of ideas, the club came up with the recommendation for a seating project at Maytag Park. The member who made the matching donation liked the idea and the city was on board, as well.
“The city has been great at developing the plan and doing the concept,” Lockwood said. “We’re pretty excited about it.”
The new seating area will allow people, particularly the elderly or handicapped, to view events at the Maytag Bowl in a shaded and easily accessible area at the top of the hill, city administrator Matt Muckler said. A series of park benches and picnic tables are also scheduled to be purchased to compliment the area.
The city also received a recommendation from the State Historic Preservation Office to have beige-colored concrete used on the project. Due to an increased cost of more than $3,400, the city decided to forgo the use of colored concrete. The city also cited possible inconsistencies in color with the initial concrete placement and possible future pavement repairs.
“I was excited to see this because I know after work on the Bowl, numerous people have to stay in their cars to listen to the entertainment,” councilwoman Evelyn George said. “This will allow more of them to be out and able to view the performances.”
Work is projected to be completed prior to the Newton Community School District graduation ceremony in late May.
