Five Mustang boys earn all-HOIC recognition

Five Prairie City-Monroe boys’ basketball players earned Heart of Iowa Conference recognition this season after the Mustangs made significant improvements from the season before.

After finishing fifth in the conference last season, PCM climbed to the runner-up position in 2017-18, and the five starters on the Mustangs’ roster were honored by the conference coaches.

Senior Jackson Thomas and junior Andrew Van Ryswyk were two of the nine players named to the first team, junior Reed Worth was a second-team selection and seniors Elijah Sperfslage and Noah Lanphier both earned honorable mention recognition.

The Mustangs were 11-3 in conference games this season, trailing only undefeated South Hamilton, which qualified for the Class 2A state tournament.

Van Ryswyk led the Mustangs in scoring and rebounding this season. In conference play, the junior averaged 11.4 points and 9.6 rebounds per game while also averaging 2.3 assists and 1.43 blocks per contest.

Van Ryswyk ranked second in the league in rebounds per game and made 58 percent of his shots, which ranked sixth. He also buried 12 treys.

Overall, Van Ryswyk averaged 12.4 points, 9.5 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.6 blocks per game while making 21 3-pointers and hitting 57 percent of his shots.

Thomas averaged 10.2 points overall and in conference games. Inside the conference, he averaged 3.6 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game while hitting 85 percent of his free throws and making 16 3-pointers.

Overall, Thomas made 28 3-pointers, shot 73 percent from the line and averaged 3.4 rebounds and two assists per game.

Worth was one of nine players to earn a spot on the second team. In conference play, Worth averaged 10.7 points, three rebounds, 2.7 assists and 1.8 steals per game while making 26 3-pointers, which ranked fifth.

Overall, Worth averaged 11 points, three rebounds and 1.7 steals per game. He ranked seventh in assists per game at three and ranked seventh in made 3-pointers with 35.

Sperfslage led the Mustangs in assists. He ranked fifth in conference play at 3.4 assists per game and was sixth in overall games at 3.1 per contest.

In conference play, Sperfslage averaged 9.6 points, 2.6 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game and buried 13 3-pointers. Overall, he scored nine points, grabbed 2.6 rebounds and swiped 1.22 steals per game. He made 16 treys this season.

Lanphier averaged 4.3 points and 3.3 rebounds per game in conference play while collecting 11 assists, five steals and 12 blocks. He also made 48 percent of his shot while making 74 percent of his free throws.

Overall, Lanphier averaged 4.4 points and 3.6 rebounds. He shot 54 percent from the floor and 73 percent from the line.
