Newton Police Department

• Mele Vaipae, 34, of Newton, was charged with domestic abuse at 9 p.m. June 27 in the 1000 block of First Street North. Newton police responded to a call of assault. When they arrived the victim alleged to have been hit in the face four times by Vaipae. Vaipae admitted to having gotten angry and punching the victim. She was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail.

• Helen L. Sutton, 46, of Newton, was charged with three counts of unlawful use of a credit card and second-degree theft at 9:49 p.m. June 24 in the 800 block of South Fifth Avenue East. According to the Newton Police Department, the arrest was made on warrants from an incident in February. A victim reported to have had their residence burglarized and their vehicle stolen while they were in the hospital. They said it happened between Jan. 27 and Feb. 21. On Feb. 3 at 4:30 p.m., Sutton was observed on video purchasing items at Pit Stop Liquors with a stolen credit card from the victim. At 10:30 p.m. Feb. 3 Sutton was seen on camera going through the Great Western Bank drive through ATM in the victim’s stolen vehicle where she withdrew $200 with the victim’s stolen card. Sutton was arrested and taken to the Jasper County Jail for her warrants.
