You’ve decided now is the time to sell. Before a potential buyer sets foot into your home you must declutter. It’s a fact that an organized, minimally decorated home sells much faster than a home that has every nook and cranny stuffed with...well, stuff.
Real estate experts also tell us that potential buyers want to picture themselves in your home, which is impossible to do when they are looking at your personal items. Add the fact that homebuyers want space - and a lot of it. The fewer things you have in your house, the more spacious it looks.
So, how do you begin? Do a room at a time, and don’t forget the basement and the garage.
The National Association of Realtors advises making three piles while sorting - keep, donate and throw away. If you can use the extra money, sell items you don’t need on Internet sale sites like Craigslist. There are numerous Facebook groups for selling items, as well. If you don’t need the money or don’t have the time, donate. Some charities will pick up your donations for free. Pitch anything that is broken or worn out.
Rent a storage unit for items you want to keep, says NAR. Remove exercise equipment and furniture that is not absolutely necessary so rooms are easy to navigate. Clean your entryway or mudroom of shoes, boots, coats, etc. Do not stuff them in the front closet, however, because potential buyers often check closets. Organize all closets.
Bookshelves should not be crammed with dusty books. Purge. Recycle magazines and newspapers. Remove all personal photos. Tidy up cords and cables and give dead plants the heave-ho, leaving a few healthy ones.
Remove everything from kitchen countertops except for a few small appliances, and take all magnets off the refrigerator. Make beds, clean floors and hide all medicines. Put out fresh towels and soap in the bathroom.
