Tips for safe winter driving

SPONSORED

Vehicle breakdowns are never fun but they can be even worse in cold and snowy weather.

Make sure you and your vehicle are ready for winter driving with these tips from Interstate Insurance Services.

1. Get winterized

If it’s been a while since your vehicle has seen the mechanic, take it in for a tune-up. When the temperatures start to drop, so can battery power. Avoid getting stranded by making sure your battery is in top shape. Check to ensure hoses, belts and fluids, such as antifreeze and oil, are ready to battle the elements. Are your tires up to snuff? During winter it’s best to swap out all-season tires for ones made especially for driving in snow, slush, or ice. How are your windshield wipers? If they look worn, it might be time to have them replaced.

2. Fuel is the rule

Automotive experts recommend keeping your gas tank more than half full at all times during the winter season. This helps to avoid freezing in the vehicle’s fuel lines, as well as keeps you from being stranded in inclement weather.

3. Pack the back

Make sure to keep a winter driving emergency kit in your trunk. Automotive experts recommend including items such as a snow shovel, ice scraper, flashlight, flares, jumper cables, blankets, a pair of gloves, water and snacks.

4. Heed your speed

When navigating slippery winter roads, make sure to drive at slower speeds and prepare for increased braking distance. Also be sure to leave plenty of distance between your vehicle and those around you.
