What is skilled nursing?

SPONSORED

When recovering from surgery, or a health or age related issue, skilled nursing helps get a person back to his/her regular activities of daily living.

“If you are going into the hospital to have an elective surgery, have a fall with a fracture or experience a heart attack or stroke, ultimately you will have a decline in strength and mobility. We offer the opportunity to stay with us to regain that strength and ability that you may have lost. Under the expert care of our physical, occupational and speech therapist, we will work with you to improve your endurance and strength. We will work to make sure that you can return to your home safely. Our nursing staff will monitor you closely and work directly with your primary care doctor and specialists to ensure that identify and prevent any complications that can arise,” said Sarah Coy Assistant Director of Nursing at Newton Village. “We are here to help you build that strength back up again. We help you get well so you can go back home,” Coy said.

There are different criteria that must be met to qualify for a skilled nursing stay. Once admitted, the covered length of stay can range anywhere from 5 days to a maximum of 100 days. “It depends on the progress of the individual and their health issues,” Coy said. “ A stroke patient might require a lengthier stay than someone who just had knee surgery.”

Skilled nursing can also help act as a way to transition a person to another level of care. “Not everyone is able to go home, so we transition those patients to appropriate levels of care such as assisted living, independent living or long term care, “ Coy said.

Skilled nursing care takes the dedication of a great interdisciplinary team that is composed of therapists, nurses, doctors and a social worker. “We begin goal and discharge planning the day of admission. We work to make sure that you have the resources necessary to make you successful when you leave us,” Coy said. “Skilled nursing is a nice place to land after a surgery or illness to get you back on your feet again.”
